Athletics Essendon needs you! With only 3 or possibly 4 rounds of AVSL being conducted at MVAC next season, we desperately require 2 volunteers to assist with the oversight of set up (11am-1pm) & pack up (4.30pm – 6pm) – one for each end of the day.  This role comes with hands-on training, a written set of simple notes, club support from John Cooper & of course, endless gratitude!!  Put simply, if you are not scared to give directions & can get along with a small but enthusiastic crew then this job can be managed by anyone over 18 & just may be for you!

Please contact John on 0414 373 157 or email john.cooper3041@gmail.com for any further questions.

The Domain Athletics Centre which is only 2km out of central Hobart, came alive over Easter as our masters congregated from all over Australia for the National Championships. Seven of our finest from AE competed across the 3 days with some very good performances, many PB’s & medals & I’m led to believe, a whole lot of laughs & fun!

Congratulations to all on your results!

Gold

  • Linda Caligiuri W60 – LJ, 3.63m & 4×100 relay
  • Kim Walsh W50 – SP, 10.92m (also a PB!)
  • Melissa Foster W45 – LJ, 5.39m, TJ, 11.69m & Pentathlon, 3343 pts

Silver

  • Mark Harper M45 – 100m, 11.74 & 200m, 23.87
  • Linda Caligiuri W60 – 60m, 9.39, 100m, 14.26 (PB & Vic Record!), 200m, 30.78 (PB)

Bronze

  • John Cooper M70 – 400m, 75.22
  • Maggie Armstrong W60 – 400m, 83.48
  • Mark Harper M45 – 60m, 7.54
  • Kim Walsh W50 – JT, 27.36m

PB’s

  • Kris Lakusa M50 – 100m, 12.52 & DT, 32.33m
  • Maggie Armstrong W60 – 800m, 3:13.14

An unfortunate disqualification in the 4×100 relay, robbed the men (Kris Lakusa & Mark Harper) of the big W.  Mark & Linda also qualified for the 100m Handicap Champion of Champions, while Kim qualified for the Shot Put Champion of Champions – stellar effort & big kudos to you all!!

The iconic Stawell Gift took place last weekend as it always does at Easter time.  The weather played nice for the first three & a half days but then turned very unsavoury as torrential rain set in & caused race cancellations, timetable changes & of course, extremely challenging conditions for the runners!  However, nothing could take away from the superlative weekend that was had by our two LAV 100m handicap winners in Alicia Gec & Mitchell Iannello whose smiles are most likely still persisting through rain, hail or shine this week!  Chase Jardine also finished a very credible 4th in the boys 100m handicap after taking the win last year. Congratulations on your very exciting results & we hope you have an equally successful Nationals campaign.

BENDIGO DRAGON MILE, Bendigo, Easter weekend

Athletics Essendon had four members venture to Bendigo for the 2024 Dragon Mile which takes place through the streets of Bendigo as part of their Easter Carnival.  It seems the trip was very worthwhile for the Barrett family achieving the following outstanding performances –

OPEN MALE – Charles Barrett, 2nd, 4:15.8
U18 MALE – Charles Barrett, 2nd, 4:18.8
U16 MALE – Jude Barrett, 3rd, 5:00.9
M50+ – Philip Barrett, 1st, 5:27.3

Looks like that trek up the highway was very worthwhile!  Talk about family dominance across several age divisions!  Congratulations gents 🙂

WORLD ATHLETICS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPS, Belgrade, March 2024

Liam Adams competed in the Men’s Senior 10km event in Belgrade, Serbia on March 30 & finished in a very credible 29th place in 29:43.  Fantastic effort Liam, we are all very proud of you here at AE.

VIC SCHOOL SPORTS AWARDS

Congratulations are in order for Maddox Wilson, M18, our outstanding young decathlete, Club record holder & now winner of the State SSV Athletics award!  Considering the number of athletes eligible for this award, this is an incredible achievement & we applaud Maddox on his extremely successful season thus far & wish him all the best for the Aus Champs!

DID YOU KNOW….

  • Athletics Essendon now has a total of 243 athletes, 4 registered officials, 14 AV registered coaches for a total of 261 members!  We welcomed 61 new members this 23/24 season!!

  • The 24/25 season is now open for registration with AV.  Please ensure you are signed up if you intend on participating in the winter XCR series.  You will be assigned a bib number upon completion of the registration process however some of these numbers will change as AV are still sorting out wreath number allocations so if you won a state title your bib number should change to a lower number.

  • The Australian Track & Field Championships begin in a week’s time in Adelaide & we have a large number of qualified athletes heading over to vie for national titles, medals & achieve some magnificent performances & WE WISH THEM ALL THE VERY BEST OF LUCK!!

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if there is anything we missed, by sending our secretary Rebecca an email at secretary@athleticsessendon.org.au.
