The Zatopek:10 Track Challenge was held last Saturday 9 December, the day was cold and wet, but we batted on as the host Club.

Five seeded heats were conducted with medals for the winners of both the male and female placegetters. The top 3 finishers in both the male and female races received a share of the prize money generously donated by Neil Ryan of Runners World in Kew.

Essendon was down on numbers, but not on enthusiasm! We had our Club superstar, Liam Adams pacing the two top heats while Charlotte Wilson ran almost the entire Div 2 race on her own to record a fantastic time of 34:48.

Ben Rowse M40 34:0 in the Div 2 race, Sam Duncan ran into a handy second place in Div 3 with 36:01, with Damien Bruneau M40 recording a solid 37:21.7 and Jeff Jones M50, not far behind on 37:25.7. Danny Hawksworth M40 raced in the Div 4 with a not too shabby, 40:42.

The Division 1 Male race was taken out by Archie Reid in a blistering 29:15.5 with the top 3 coming in under 30 minutes.

Thank you
We thank Runners World for their generosity in providing the prize money for our competitors.

A huge thanks also goes out to:

  • Stephen Murphy for his tireless efforts in organising this event in conjunction with AV and ensuring the day ran smoothly;
  • the setup crew comprising of David Jones, Joel Cuzzi, Matty Goodger, Dom Condello and John Cooper; and
  • Rachel Brici and Danny Hawksworth who worked the check-in table and Maria Strong capably calling the times for the lap scorers.
  • Finally, a special thanks to Ian Upton, our Meet Manager as well as our other AV officials, Brendan and John.

This weekend is our last round of Shield for the year with entries closing at midday today. Good luck to all our competitors and hopefully you score a PB for Christmas!!

AVSL starts up again for R8 on January 13 across Doncaster, Murrumbeena, Bendigo, Ballarat and
Geelong with a twilight meet at Landy under lights.
