AV Shield: Round 2 Results

A scintillating 100m performance from Christian McFarland-Ravanello, a big leap in the triple jump from Tierra Exum, and impressive all-round efforts from sisters Louise and Catherine Mendes highlighted a big round two of AV Shield competition for Athletics Essendon at Werribee and Geelong on Saturday.

McFarland-Ravanello clocked 10.88sec for the under-20 men to lead home clubmate Junior Mabia (11.06), while Exum’s jump of 12.24m was the biggest of the day across all divisions and fell narrowly short of the season’s best of 12.31m she set in Sydney back in April.

But the performances of the Mendes sisters may have taken the cake, under-20 athlete Louise sending the hammer 53.20m for the highest individual point score of the day and Catherine a standout in the under-18 division with her long jump and 100m performances of 5.58m and 12.38sec respectively.

Also impressing over 100m were Nina Lawson (under 20, 12.50) and Stephanie Richards (under 18, 12.54), while Jessie Andrew backed up from last week’s stellar 100m effort with an equally dominant performance of 25.03 in the under 18 200m.

And while Exum set the tone for Essendon in the sandpit, she was far from the only standout, Lachlan Menara (under 18, 13.59m), Zara Keca (under 20, 11.55m), Montana Djatschenko (under 18, 11.22m) and Emily Portaro (under 16, 11.22m) all recording notable results in the triple jump and Jordan Mancuso leading the way in the open men’s long jump with 6.62m.

For the second week in a row, Essendon dominated the team standings in picking up seven division wins, its 40-plus, under 18, under 16, and under 14 men and its under 20, under 18, and under 14 women all coming out on top.

But the club’s open men will have to work hard to turn things around and get themselves back into the hunt for AV Shield Final contention after again being comfortably beaten by Melbourne University and Western Athletics.

AV Shield competition continues with round three on Saturday, with the Meadowglen International Athletics Stadium in Epping designated as Essendon’s home venue.
