ATHS ESSENDON PRESENTATION DAY

We had a solid turnout of members, friends & family for our annual AE presentation afternoon at the Buckley Park Bowls Club.  We were grateful to be joined by the Mayor of Moonee Valley & Councillor, Pierce Tyson as well as his colleague, Councillor, Samantha Byrnes & thank them very much for their active support of our Club & our magnificent sport. Everyone enjoyed a delicious BBQ (very capably cooked by our resident stand-in chef, Dom Condello), plenty of beautiful Autumn sunshine & a few laughs amongst our coaches & athletes attempting to master the game of lawn bowls!

Then the real business went down…. presentations for the ‘23 winter cross country season & the ‘23/’24 summer track & field season.  All our well-deserving athletes were presented with medals, trophies or certificates to acknowledge their stellar season results, including records & we are proud to further congratulate them as well as the Junior Club Athlete of the Year in Archie Noakes (Charlotte Wilson) & Senior Club Athlete of the Year, Linden Hall.

Thank you to all who attended to make it an enjoyable afternoon & to the Committee members who gave up their time & energy to organise the venue, awards, BBQ & guest attendees, particularly John Cooper, Joel Cuzzi, Dom Condello, Stephen Murphy & our social media duo of Cat & Jack.  Our MC for the day, Vishnu Satish did a wonderful job & we look forward to seeing you back in front of the mike next year Vishnu!  Big appreciation goes out to the ever-entertaining & talented, Linden Hall for giving us a snapshot of what it takes to vie for Olympic selection (again!) & for sharing her “day in the life of” Q&A session 🙂

Our world class 400m sprinter, Mikeala Selaidinakos (Steve Gaffney) flew to Miami in the US for a training camp & then onto Nassau, Bahamas last week to take her place in the Australian 4x400m relay team…. and she didn’t disappoint!!! Proudly donning the green & gold, the girls didn’t qualify in the heats but were given a second shot the following day in the repechage heat (when the best-placed teams who failed to qualify compete again for another chance to race the final).  They unfortunately were allocated an extremely tough heat with three of the fastest teams in their heat & they ran home a gallant fourth, finishing in 16th place in the world!  A season’s best time from the team & a massive congratulations from all of us here at Essendon to Team Mikki; we are incredibly proud! Now off to Fiji for Oceanias in June 🙂

Athletics Essendon needs you! With only 3 or possibly 4 rounds of AVSL being conducted at MVAC next season, we desperately require 2 volunteers to assist with the oversight of set up (11am-1pm) & pack up (4.30pm – 6pm) – one for each end of the day.  This role comes with hands-on training, a written set of simple notes, club support from John Cooper & of course, endless gratitude!!  Put simply, if you are not scared to give directions & can get along with a small but enthusiastic crew then this job can be managed by anyone over 18 & just may be for you!

Please contact John on 0414 373 157 or email john.cooper3041@gmail.com for any further questions.

HELP NEEDED!!  Call out for 2 helpers 24/25 AVSL season

Yes, we have them all!!!  The Club would like to congratulate our very own Chris Mitrevski on being named in the Australian Team heading to Paris in less than 3 months. What a superlative achievement & we will be glued to our screens cheering the loudest!!!  We know how hard you have worked Chris & we wish you all the very best in your lead-up to Paris.

World U20’s is in Peru in August & the in-form, Sophia Gregorevic (Steve Gaffney) has been selected to represent the Australian colours in the Women’s 4 x 400m relay – what an awesome way to finish a stellar season!  Congratulations Sophia & coach, Steve!  Best of luck!

Meanwhile, Mikeala is heading back over the seas to Fiji in June for the Oceania Athletics Championships, named in the senior team for the 400m.  Proudly making their debut in the green & gold, named in the U18 Oceania Team is the always firing, Finley Symons (Gregor Gojrzewski), selected in the Men’s 3000m & our superstar high flyers, Khushnoor & Sukhnoor Rangi (Bill Georgantas) in the Women’s Pole Vault.  What an amazing achievement & we wish you all the very best leading into the competition & much success in your events!!

Another great run from our very experienced middle distance & cross country runner, Anna Kasapis at the Dyson Relay, The Tan, last weekend.  Cruising over the line in the 3.82km dual leg race in 13:12 – fantastic result Anna & we look forward to following your results over the winter 🙂

Good luck to all those athletes racing this Saturday at the inaugural Hanging Rock course!  It’s said to be a beautiful, picturesque backdrop for this week’s round 2 & the weather looks to be kind also (perhaps pack a picnic to enjoy afterwards?!).

Remember you must be a registered season 24/25 athlete to compete & the Club still accumulates points towards the end of season Championship total – go TEAM ESSENDON!!
