Weekly Wrap May 1st 2024

Athletics Essendon’s annual presentation day is THIS COMING SUNDAY, May 5, commencing at 1pm.  Come along for a barbie, a chinwag & celebrate many of our outstanding athletes & their performances over the summer track & field season!  The weather is looking to be fairly sunny & I have it from a very reliable source, that our  Club Olympians, Linden Hall & Liam Adams will be in attendance.  Linden is going to  have a chat to us all about her athletics career & her journey to becoming an Olympian, with a Q&A afterwards & both athletes are happy to make themselves available for some photos which will be an opportunity not to be missed. Tickets are available by clicking on the above link & are available up until 1pm on Sunday.  We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there!!

Our very own Aidan Lowe, Sam Meehan & Darcy Parker recently headed over to the SA Athletics Stadium, Adelaide after being proudly selected to represent Team Vic at the ALAC… & their performances didn’t disappoint!!

Aidan finished a gutsy 5th in the U13 800m in a stellar time of 2:16.70.

Sam clinched the GOLD medal in the U15 1500m in an incredible 4:15.56.

Darcy backed up his success at the recent Australian Championships, also in Adelaide, with  GOLD in the U14 Long Jump, recording a mighty jump of 5.85m, GOLD in the U14 400m, crossing the finish line in a speedy 51.84 & also medalled in his third event, claiming SILVER in the U14 800m with a magnificent time of 2:02.65!

What amazing results & we are sure you will be looking forward to a well-earned rest, even if only for a week or two!  Congratulations on your fantastic season 23/24!

Athletics Essendon needs you! With only 3 or possibly 4 rounds of AVSL being conducted at MVAC next season, we desperately require 2 volunteers to assist with the oversight of set up (11am-1pm) & pack up (4.30pm – 6pm) – one for each end of the day.  This role comes with hands-on training, a written set of simple notes, club support from John Cooper & of course, endless gratitude!!  Put simply, if you are not scared to give directions & can get along with a small but enthusiastic crew then this job can be managed by anyone over 18 & just may be for you!

Please contact John on 0414 373 157 or email john.cooper3041@gmail.com for any further questions.

XCR ‘24 at JELLS PARK, ROUND 1

The winter cross country season opened last Saturday at Jells Park in Rowville with perfect race conditions – very little wind, fast dry course & mild temperatures with a spattering of sunshine!  There was the 6km (Open) & 3km (Junior) team relay options & AE fielded a total of 14 teams – 6 Open, 8 Junior teams for a total of 50 runners.  Not bad considering the Aus Champs was only 1-2 weeks earlier!

Our newly elected Club Team Captains all raced & we would like to take a minute to celebrate the appointment of these new positions.  AE very proudly appointed four very deserving athletes to lead the members through the upcoming winter season of XCR cross country & road running, made up of 10 rounds across various metro & regional venues.

FOP – Bianca Puglisi (Frances Lipscombe)

MOP – Matt Sostaric

FJnr – Emily Mifsud (Gregor Gojrzewski)

MJnr – James Cruse (Charlotte Wilson)

The Club would like to thank these four very deserving athletes for taking on these important Club leadership roles & ask everyone to help us in celebrating this achievement.  Appreciation also goes out to our six Club distance coaches – Barb, Charlotte, Frances, Gregor, Mark & Ken, for supporting this integral part of recognising & mentoring these athletes.
