XCR ‘24 ROUND 8 ROUND-UP, Sat Aug 17th

Ekiden Relays took place at the picturesque St. Anne’s Winery in Myrniong on Saturday August 17th, for round 8 of the ‘24 cross country season & my goodness, the results DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!  Despite mud, hills & a sprinkling of rain, AE athletes achieved exceptional performances all round & some valuable XCR premiership points.  The junior men’s teams achieved a clean sweep across every age group!!  Congratulations to AE Coaches, Charlotte & Gregor who coach almost every one of these medal-winning athletes!

A big congratulations to Zara Smith who qualified for the SSA National XC Champs & raced in the 12yo Girls 3k race at Yarra Glen, coming a very credible 13th overall with a blistering time of 12:13.33!!  Well done Zara & we can’t wait to continue to follow your progress in the summer season

Our seasoned campaigners in Mark HARPER, Mel FOSTER, Mark GIGLIO & Maggie ARMSTRONG made the trip over to Gothenburg, Sweden for the World Masters Champs & competed in their respective age groups in both track & field.  Competition was hot & our AE Masters came home with some extraordinary results!!

Mark H was in the M45 category & won team Gold in the 4×100 relay with a time of 44.54 & an Australian record to boot!!  What an incredible achievement!! He also competed individually in the 100m, making it to the finals where he finished 8th (11.91/11.88 heat time) & the 200m, also qualifying for the final & coming 6th with  a ridiculously quick time of 23.63.

His partner, Mel, a gun jumper, came home with two lots of silverware to add to her collection, coming 2nd in both the W45 Long Jump & Triple Jump, leaping 5.46m (+1.8) & 11.75 (+0.8) respectively!!  You certainly made that long trip worthwhile Mel, big congrats!!

Maggie had a huge program over there & came oh so close to a bronze medal in the W60 4×100 relay, with a team 4th & only 1.25 seconds off that podium finish!  Next time Maggie!!  She also raced in the individual 100m (17.31 29th), 200m (35.34 29th), 400m (1:22.14 17th) & 800m (3:27.76 28th).  You are truly inspirational & amazing!!

Mark G made the semis in both the M50 200m & 400m, finishing 13th & 20th respectively with a season best in the 200 of 24.24 & a best 400 time of a super-slick 56.10 – impressive effort Mark!

AE would like to sincerely congratulate you all on a very successful international campaign in Sweden & can’t wait to see your performances in season 24/25!

Photos hopefully to follow soon 🙂
