Olympian profile – Chris Erickson

Chris Erickson is selected for the 50km at Rio 2016 after winning the Australian selection trial (Dec 2015, Melbourne). The 50km has always been his favourite event, however he earned selection for the 20km at the Beijing and London Olympic Games.

Erickson coaches Brendon Reading. They trained together in Canberra before Erickson moved to Melbourne and now they work together remotely. Reading also has been selected in the 50km at this his first Games. Erickson is coached by Brent Vallance, who used to also coach Jared Tallent.

Erickson has a boy and a girl with wife Rachel. He is a dad, trains 150-160 kms p/w, coaches Reading remotely and works as a student adviser for the Deakin University Student Association.

His father Tim was a race walker and inspired his career. He was selected for the Olympics in 1976 and 1980 but never made the Games as the 50km event was cancelled in Montreal and the boycott and lack of funding ruined Moscow for him and others.
