John Cooper: Life Member

Congratulations to John Cooper who was yesterday inducted as an Athletics Essendon Life Member at our AGM. Whilst John’s cumulative membership is about 20 years, he has been involved with the club in two periods spread over 50 years. His impact upon the club, especially over the last 10 years has been substantial.

John initially joined the club in 1967-68 season as a 15 year old and competed for the club until 1973. In his second stint he has become pivotal in AVSL, competing in multiple track & field events on any one day as well as ensuring all club duty allocations had been assigned.

Since John’s returned in 2014, he has gone on to play a pivotal role in the management of the club, serving as club Secretary for seven years as well as managing the 40+ team and being one of the key leaders in the event setup team for when we host AVSL meets. John along with Brian Anderson had successfully organised the fundraising Trivia Nights for about 8 years, until COVID lockdowns prevented them occurring. John’s dedication to the club’s management has ensured that basic functions of the club were all performed in a timely manner and has worked tirelessly with the Moonee Valley Council to ensure that our track and clubrooms are as good as can be.

The club is extremely thankful to John for all of the tasks he has seen through to fruition. Ask not what the club can do for you. John will ask you to do something for the club.
