AVSL Round 2

Two from two. Athletics Essendon has had the perfect start to the 2019 / 20 aths season. We now sit 4 points clear on top of the Div 1 ladder, from Diamond Valley, Box Hill and Glenhuntly.

We had wins in the Yellow Zone comp to the M14, W14, M16, W16, M20 and M40+ teams.

Across the state our best performing teams were M20, M16 (first by 3100 points), W16, M14 and M40+ teams.

We have come out in force with many good performances earning high points and many athletes doing multiple events to build their points tally….this is the name of this new game….weight of numbers wins!

Some highlights from the round: Bianca Puglisi (4:50.9) and Lachie Attard (4:24.6) ran great 1500 meters the day after winning the 3Km Marly Cup at Maribyrnong SC. Lachie also got good points from a 100 and long jump! Aimee Junger took silver in the VCE division and backed up with a good performance at Doncaster.

Linda Caligiuri topped the state for points in the 200m (512) on her way to bettering her PB by 0.62 sec.

We had club Mums, Kelly Wood (200m) and Kim Walsh (200m and discus) enjoying the competition. Along with Jack, the Walsh family contributed about 1300 points to the club’s tally.

Our “Old Man Walking Team” of Mark Donahoo, Brian Anderson, Duncan Knox and Steve Murphy racked up a handy 1526 points

Ilana Gandine pulled two PBs at Doncaster in the 100m and 400m. Ilana holds the club’s Under 14 and U 15 100m records from about 14 years ago and it’s great to have her running so well after a long break. She cruised through her 400 so we hope to see an even faster time soon.

President & club coach Mark Carey had a good day with many of his athletes recording 1500m PBs. Michael Martello 14 sec, Bashir Abdinoor 6 sec, Brody Thrum 23 sec, Noah Hijazi 20 sec, Zac Hijazi 3 sec, and Christian Knox just shy of breaking 5 min but getting PBs in both the 400m & 1500m. Christian also competed in the long jump and relay. Great work by the squad.

In his first season with ESS, Chris Vu has impressed. We’ve watched him train under Max Warlow for a number of years and now we see him in Red & Black, recording 11.82s 100m as well as fast 200m and 400m runs. Another of Max’s squad to perform first up was Tarek Zahraman with an 11.73 sec 100m.

One of the highlights was seeing Arron Downes compete again. At 45 years his 56.82 sec 400m and 4:51.5 1500m produced 822 points. Arron is currently in the top 5 in the world over 800m in 2019 in his age division.

Jade Guglielmino leaped to a pole vault PB of 3.70m. Great cheering from Mum in the crowd!

Joanne Margiolis continued to perform in multiple events. This week it was 100m, 400m discus, javelin & long jump. And she still made time to take some happy snaps!

New member, Isabelle Butler competed for the club for the first time in the 100m & 400m despite being jet lagged after a long flight from the US.

There were many other hard working athletes at Doncaster and other venues. Emily and Dash Newton didn’t stop all day. Archie Noakes running 4:18.3 for his 1500 as well as going over the 110m hurdles, throwing the jav and helping in a relay! Kevin Healy 49.56m discus plus jav. Katie Baynes 100m and long jump (452 points). Ellie Kewish 100m, 100m hurdles and long jump. The list of performances goes on.

Well done to everyone! We meet at Aberfeldie this week. The weather isn’t looking kind but come along, get the points and keep us ON TOP.
