Athletics Essendon is located in Melbourne’s inner north-west and invites athletes of all ages and abilities to join. The club is made up of Olympic and Paralympic representatives, aspiring juniors, recreational runners and masters athletes.
Supporting athletes and para-athletes aged 12+, we provide members with the opportunity to compete across a range of events including weekly track & field and cross country competitions as well as specialist meets. The wide range of events provides athletes with the opportunity to qualify for state and national championships.
Over the past two decades Athletics Essendon has worked hard to provide our junior athletes with a strong foundation. As athletes continue to develop their skill set and slowly progress to choosing a preferred event discipline, we encourage them to branch out of their comfort zones and try new events. Participating in a wide range of events enables our juniors to feel part of the larger team and develop their friendships outside of their coaching groups.
Success at both individual and team level has contributed to the club’s continued overall success. Claiming the inaugural Athletics Victoria Shield League (AVSL) title in 2020 was an all-round club effort, whilst the hard work of our Open athletes has enabled the club to win the prestigious H. H. Hunter Memorial Shield 19 times, 12 of which have occurred since 2000. This shield is awarded to the best overall Open team performance at the Victorian Track & Field Championships.
In recent years, the club has been renowned for its exemplary results at both the Victorian and Australian Track & Field Championships. Success at these two events has contributed to a number of our athletes being selected to represent Australia.
Since 1964 the club has had a steady stream of Australian representatives at the Olympics and World Athletics Championships. It’s the club’s honour to have had excellent representation at the following events: Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, World Athletics Championships, World Para-Athletics Championships, World Athletics Cross Country Championships, World Athletics U20 Championships, World Athletics Continental Cup, Diamond League and Universiade.
