2023 Victorian Combined Event Championships

Whilst the majority of us enjoyed a weekend at the beach or at home with the air-conditioning at full blast 10 of our athletes were braving the scorching weather at the Victorian and Australian Masters Combined Event Championships in Bendigo.

There were impressive results from all athletes, showcasing their immense depth across both track & field events. Our U16 Women tuned their heptathlon int a sea of red and black, with six of the nine athletes entered representing Essendon. Whilst all athletes performed strongly across all seven events, it was evident that our hurdling future is bright with the rare feat of all of the top six results in the 90m hurdles being claimed by Essendon athletes. The impressive result was almost replicated again in the 200m. Congratulations to Lillian Micallef on recording a PB in all seven events, particularly given the conditions.

Congratulations to Jamison Towers (4771 points) and Maddox Wilson (4123 points) on securing gold in their respective heptathlons. Both Towers and Wilson also broke the club’s existing U16 records.

Melissa Foster pulled on the yellow, white and black of Western Australia over the weekend as she represented her home state in the Australian Masters Combined Event Championships. Foster performed extremely well across all events and took the national title in the 40+ Women’s heptathlon.

A massive thank you to the following parents for braving the uncomfortable conditions and assisting with club duties over the weekend: Dale Walker, Tania Hardin, Claire Weber, Steve Micallef, Tania Hardin, Kristen Towers and Travis Wilson.
