The Athlete Diaries: Competition Life as a Thrower (AVSL Round 3)

By Sarah Mullens

It was another stellar weekend of throwing from Athletics Essendon’s dedicated throws crew. Still minus Matt Makin, and missing crew admin Sarah Mullens due to injury, Mark Hambling (M40), Mason Hambling (M14), and Imogen Makin (F16) made the journey out to Knox and Doncaster for an afternoon of throwing madness.

Taking ownership of the skating rink Knox ring, all three throwers launched new PBs – Mason kicked things off with a nice 6.91m, followed by Mark with 11.21m, with Immy rounding the PB-fest out on her final throw with 11.91m.

Over to Hammer for a bit of fun, with Mark scoring a new PB of 29.60m off a standing throw. Great news that all the throwers on Hammer Sheet 2 at Knox managed to avoid the trees this time!

The crew appreciated the short trip from Knox to Doncaster, where they joined the fun at Discus Sheet 5. This sheet was very ably run by out-of-action Crew member Matt Makin. Immy finished with a Season Best 30.00m, and Mason threw a new PB of 14.00. Mark joined in the fun with a new PB of 29.70. He also rounded out the day with a Season Best Jav of 23.62m.

Bragging rights go well and truly to Mark Hambling, who topped the MVA in the Men 40-45 age group with 1248 points, quite possibly to the chagrin of all the runners out there! Hats off to Immy Makin with a handy 1218 points.
