Vale John Higham OAM

I had the pleasure of competing against and with John Higham.

The first time I competed against John was when John was running for St Kevins  It was at the Preston Athletics track in a 400m. Despite John being a teenager you could see at the beginning of his athletics journey he had a special talent.

John then moved to Melbourne University Athletics Club and by this time John’s ability had come to be evident to all

John ultimately, saw the light and finished his competitive athletics career with Essendon

John then turned his athletics career to the administration side of athletics, succeeding myself as club Chairman, before ultimately being Chairman of Athletics Victoria and subsequently return for another stint as club Chairman

John’s athletics ability was far ranging. A winner of three Australian 800m titles he is also the only person to complete the double winning the 400 and 800 Australian titles in the same year (1978). John’s ability is best illustrated by, the following; he could run 10.6s for the 100m, 21.2 for the 200m, 45.7s for the 400m and 1:45.6 for the 800

A man whose contribution to athletics will be greatly missed

Rest in Peace
