Vale Garry Calvert.

Athletics Essendon are saddened, and mourn the sudden passing of elite javelin coach, and former Australian javelin champion, Garry Calvert.

Garry passed away from a heart attack in Beijing on Friday the 27th of July.

Garry had been serving as the Chinese national javelin coach, and had previously served as India’s javelin coach from February 2016 to April 2017.

A multiple Australian javelin champion (1979, ’81 and ’82), Garry was selected for the 1982 Commonwealth Games.

Originally from South Australia, Garry, along with co South Australian thrower Phil Nettle and Athletics Essendon club President (and then champion 800 metre athlete) John Higham, helped transform Athletics Essendon into one of Victoria’s elite athletics clubs in the early 1980’s.

Our thoughts and condolences are with Garry’s family.
